Angels and ET's
There are good reasons to think that angels might be the best possible examples of people having alien contact a long time ago.
Consider the following:
I'd say that makes for a list of things that some aliens seem to be able to do.
The whole angelic concept is one which has undergone many revisions since early Biblical times.
The English version of the word means 'messenger'. But in Hebrew other terms for heavenly beings (apart from messenger) mean 'gods', 'sons of gods' or 'chariots of gods'.
So the original idea was perhaps that these beings performed some sort of communication and that they could be associated with other powerful beings, probably coming from the sky.
In fact, in Genesis there is talk of them coming down to bed human women. The resulting offspring were giants called Nephilim. Goliath was a Nephilim, standing 10 feet tall.
You probably think of wings and a halo and, maybe, a harp. Certainly flowing robes are there as well. These are what we consider virtually 'traditional' aspects.
And that's pretty much it for the way we think of them today.
But that's not always been the case.
In the Bible they start off with the long robes (which haven't changed). Wings were there in pre-Biblical times as shown in Sumerian carvings, but later on they were spoken of as having two, four or even six wings. They also had more than one face and many eyes.
These are not your typical images of today. In fact, early Biblical portrayals have them as fierce-some creatures; burning swords and the like, guarding Eden and slaying devils.
Take, as just one example, this description from Revelations 10:1," And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire."
Pretty good description of a rocket or similar vehicle descending, isn't it? And there are plenty of other descriptions to be found.
Today, we think of them as gentle, almost simpering things. How different from their origins!
What does it all mean?
For one thing, it means that we humans have had alien contact for a lot longer than the last couple of centuries.
It means also that aliens have interfered with human history more directly in the past than they are currently doing. (Whether that proves to be important or better or worse only time will tell.)
It means that we should be a little more liberal in our interpretation of aliens and that there are certainly similarities between the actions of some modern aliens and those beings of the Bible. Some do want to help us, it seems. Some have good intentions even though the technology might be scary. Just like in the Bible.
It means that there should be a more expansive interpretation of the Bible rather than a restrictive one, allowing room for ordinary people of the time to try to explain what they witnessed in ways that made sense to them then.
It means also that we should think of aliens in new ways. Instead of always moving around in vehicles, some seem to have the ability to transport themselves instantly, appearing suddenly. So perhaps there was more than one type of alien 'disguised' as angelic messengers and that they came from different places. (It is not much use to refer to angelic hierarchies as these were compiled by various people in different religions over a period of time when the study of angelology became very popular. Nevertheless, there are differences suggestive of different alien races living in different places.)
Above all, it means that aliens have had an influence on us, our history and our culture for a very long time.
Doesn't it seem strange that we're only now making a big fuss about it?
